Great Items to Help Rehab an Achilles Tendon Injury – Carol’s Teaching Tip

written by Carol Crincoli, Pure Pilates Director

This past July, my husband Rico tore his Achilles tendon. Actually, it was officially described as an avulsion by the surgeon, which simply means he tore the tendon directly off the ankle bone! Ouch. I’ve learned quite a bit about this injury and the rehabilitation process. I am sharing a bunch of items we found helpful for Rico’s rehab. Many of these products may be beneficial for any lower-body injury, not just an Achilles tendon tear,

Important Note: These products helped Rico after surgery and as he continues to rehab his leg. Please discuss what may be best for your leg injury with your doctor or health care provider before you invest in the product.

We started out with basic ice packs, then found this amazing ice wrap. It keeps the foot and ankle in the proper position while icing the entire area of the foot and leg.

Sleeping with a boot is not very comfortable, but this one is softer and makes immobilizing the foot and ankle while in bed much better.

Rico started with a soft cast for 2 weeks, followed by a hard cast for a month. This cast cover was a dream, so he could shower and protect the cast from water.

Yes, you can use house pillows to elevate your leg, so this is a bit of a splurge. The elevation pillow can be adjusted at different heights. Rico elevated while sleeping, while sitting at his desk or watching TV.

Scooters are great to get around. This one was perfect for wheeling around the house. They make scooters with thicker tires, which I think is better for the outdoors.

The hands free crutch is not going to be for everyone. It requires a bit of core strength and balance and can be awkward until you get used to it. This was perfect for tasks in the house, specifically cooking so Rico could be hands free, without crutches.

Every doctor should be recommending this type of product if you are wearing a boot for an injury. Once you put on a boot, your hips are out of alignment and your walking gait will be “wonky”. This product will help level out your legs/hips and that will help avoid back and/or hip pain.

This contraption is a big splurge! I made the decision to purchase this piece of equipment because Rico wants to continue to play soccer for years to come. My concern is not only for his injured achilles, which I am confident will heal completely, but for his other leg, which had a partial tear many years ago. The achilles elite will strengthen the ankle, knee and lower leg muscle. Everyone needs that so maybe you’ll see it in the studio one day.

The Sanddune Stepper is a balance pad system designed specifically to treat foot, ankle, knee, hip and lower back pain. It is a low impact tool that would be similar to walking on a sand beach with an immediate bounce back effect. Perfect for rehabilitation after surgery, debilitating diseases and/or for sports injury recovery. Again, not only great for Rico, but for all the clients at Pure Pilates. This will be our newest prop you will find in our studio.
