There Isn't a Right or Wrong Choice
One of the beautiful things about starting a Pilates practice is the variety of ways to begin.
Mat Pilates classes are an affordable and accessible introduction to Pilates. But don't let the lack of equipment fool you. The original mat workout created by Joseph Pilates is both challenging and rewarding when practiced as he intended.
Joseph Pilates also designed a variety of equipment, or what we in the Pilates world call the apparatus. While the Reformer is the piece of equipment most people recognize and the one most commonly used in group classes, he also created the Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, and several other apparatus. Most of the pieces use spring resistance to assist or challenge movement. The equipment helps people build strength, improve control, and develop greater body awareness as they progress in their Pilates practice.
Joseph Pilates believed his method should help people move better in everyday life, not just during exercise. That philosophy continues to guide Pilates teachers around the world today.
Today, many people are introduced to Pilates through group Reformer classes, while others begin with private instruction. In a private Pilates session, clients have the opportunity to work on a variety of apparatus while following a program designed around their individual goals, movement patterns, and experience.
There is not a right or wrong way to begin a Pilates practice. The best choice depends on your goals, experience, health history, learning style, and budget. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision. Let's take a closer look.
What Are Group Pilates Classes?
Today, many people are introduced to Pilates through a group class. Mat classes continue to be offered in gyms, community centers, and boutique studios, while Reformer classes have become one of the most popular ways to experience Pilates. You will find many boutique studios that focus primarily on small group equipment classes.
One of the biggest benefits of group Pilates is the sense of community. Exercising alongside others creates an energy that can be motivating and enjoyable, and having a regular class on your calendar is a great way to stay consistent with your exercise routine.
Group classes can provide excellent instruction and are an affordable way to experience Pilates. Because the instructor is teaching the class as a whole, however, the workout is designed for the group rather than for one individual. While instructors often offer modifications, the exercises, pace, and programming are intended to meet the needs of the class.
For many people, group Pilates is an excellent choice. If you enjoy working out with others, are looking for a fun and consistent exercise routine, and don't need a program designed specifically around your individual goals or health considerations, group classes can be a wonderful way to build strength, improve mobility, and experience the many benefits of Pilates.
What Is Private Pilates?
One of the biggest misconceptions about private Pilates is that it's simply a one on one workout on the Reformer. In fact, private Pilates is an individualized experience that introduces you to the full Pilates method.
Many people contact us asking about private Reformer sessions, and we're always happy to introduce them to the Reformer. We also have the opportunity to teach the foundational mat exercises and incorporate the other pieces of equipment that Joseph Pilates designed, including the Cadillac, Chair, Barrels, and other apparatus. Each piece of equipment has a unique purpose, allowing your instructor to choose the exercises that best support your body and your goals.
The greatest advantage of private Pilates is the individualized programming. Every session is designed specifically for you. The exercises, equipment, and pace are tailored to your needs, and your program evolves as your strength, movement, and confidence develop.
Over time, your instructor gets to know your body, your movement patterns, and your goals. That relationship allows your program to evolve with you, whether you're working toward better balance, recovering from an injury, improving athletic performance, or simply wanting to move and feel your best.
Which Pilates Experience Is Right for You?
Private Pilates and group classes each offer unique benefits, and for many people, they complement one another beautifully. Some clients begin with private sessions to learn the Pilates method, become familiar with the equipment, and build a strong foundation before joining a group class. Others primarily attend group classes but schedule occasional private sessions to refine their technique, work toward a specific goal, or continue the progress they made after completing physical therapy.
Private Pilates may be the best place to start if you:
- Are new to Pilates and would like individualized instruction.
- Are recovering from an injury or surgery, or have recently completed physical therapy.
- Have chronic pain or specific movement limitations.
- Have athletic or performance goals.
- Prefer a program designed specifically around your body and your goals.
Group Pilates may be a great fit if you:
- Enjoy the motivation and camaraderie of exercising with others.
- Are looking for a fun and consistent fitness routine.
- Are comfortable following instruction designed for the class as a whole.
- Want a more budget-friendly way to experience Pilates.
Your Pilates practice doesn't have to fit into just one category. As your goals change, it's common to move between private sessions and group classes or enjoy a combination of both. The best choice is the one that supports your goals, fits your lifestyle, and keeps you moving consistently.
What to Look for in a Private Pilates Studio
Just as every person is different, every Pilates studio is different. Teaching philosophy, instructor experience, session structure, and the equipment available can all vary from one studio to another.
If you're considering private Pilates, take a little time to learn about the studio and its instructors. Ask about their training and experience, how they personalize sessions, and whether their approach aligns with your goals.
The best Pilates studio isn't necessarily the closest or the least expensive. It's the one where the teaching philosophy, experience, and approach align with your goals and support the way you want to move.
Choosing the Best Place to Begin
Whether you begin with a group class, private sessions, or a combination of both, the most important step is simply getting started. Pilates is a lifelong practice that can grow and change with you. As your goals evolve, your Pilates practice can evolve as well.
At Pure Pilates, we specialize in one on one and partner Pilates because we believe individualized instruction provides the strongest foundation for long-term success. Every session is thoughtfully designed around the individual, allowing us to meet you where you are and help you progress at a pace that's right for your body and your goals.
If you're curious whether private Pilates is the right place to begin, we'd love to welcome you for a Discovery Session. It's an opportunity to meet your instructor, experience the Pilates method firsthand, ask questions, and determine the approach that's the best fit for your goals.
